The Kabuki series opened my eyes to the boundless potential of the graphic novel genre. Not only is the plot the definition of epic, but its gorgeous art style destroys expectations. The core of Kabuki is personal transformation rewriting ones identity, history, and culture to live a new narrative.
It explores the binary of inner/outer self, with the motif of masks to protect/represent /5. Though Kabuki all along has been a representation of Mack's inner being - this last book THE ALCHEMY was more all about MACK and less about the character of KABUKI - yeah I know you can say they are one in the same - but it is so heavy handed that it losses the feel and there's a disconnect from the rest of the series/5(17).
Seems like a small book but it has most of what I need to enjoy Kabuki. One has to commend the authors for seems like this was the first thorough introduction to this wonderful form of Japanese theatre not only in English but in any other language than a lot or as they will say in the Kabuki stage arigatai gozarimasuru/5(5).
